Who We Are About Us » Who We Are
Since the early 1980s, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Juan County has been providing and helped to create magic in people's lives. BBBS works to help children achieve their potential through positive adult relationships. A volunteer does not need any special skills to be a Big Brother or Big Sister. They only need to be interested in sharing special moments with a child by sharing experiences, celebrating accomplishments, and listening to a child's concerns. By these moments a Big Brother or Big Sister can make a difference to a child.

The Difference We Make
Local statistic from our School Based Mentoring Program (data obtained from San Juan County teachers) show that students who were matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister had: - 72% increase in academic performance
- 74% increase in class participation
- 72% improvement in classroom behavior
- 46% improvement in avoiding delinquency
Information from our national office indicates that matching only two children in every classroom not only affects the children who are matched, but it improves the environment of the entire classroom. Because these children do better at focusing they are generally less disruptive, which provides teachers the ability to better administer their lesson plan. This in turn helps other children to focus better and results in an improved learning environment.
