Community Based Programs

Community-based mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship. Bigs and Littles get together on their own to share fun activities they both enjoy. Our Littles are between 6 and 14 years of age. The Mentor and Little commit to staying with their match for one year. Each 1-to-1 relationship is supported by a case manager responsible for supervision. Here are our newest Community Based Programs:
Sports Buddies is our Community-Based program with a focus on active lifestyle mentoring. Our agency is partnering with local businesses and the community to be able to provide free and discounted passes to local events and admission to swimming pools, golf course, recreation center, health club, and the like.
Project Venture is a Farmington Municipal School District after school Program. Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with FMSD to provide Mentors to the children who participate in Project Venture. The boys and girls and Mentors meet at Tibbett's Middle School for one hour a week or two hours every other Wednesday. When the Project Venture group meets, all share in fun, team building activities both on site and out in the community. To request more information on this program, call Susie Manning at 486-4804 and 326-1508.
Second Chance is a grant funded program for adjudicated males, ages 15-17. A Mentor would be matched with a young man while incarcerated and be a support to him while he transitions back into the community. To request more information on this program, call Susie Manning at 486-4804 and 326-1508.

School Based Program

Volunteers are matched with a young person and visit participating schools on a time that fits their schedules. Time commitment is once-a -week for the academic year. During the time spent together the two can have personal discussions, do homework, play games, or use the time however needed. An on-site BBBS case manager oversees the program and provides support. By providing 1 hour a week in a school the child benefits from regular contact and you are helping a child improve their school performance and aiding them with social development.

Adopt - A - School

Our corporate mentoring programs are partnerships between local corporations and Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Juan County (BBBSSJC), with the goal of creating mentoring friendships between corporate volunteers and children attending an elementary or middle school within close proximity of the corporate site. The corporate partner sponsors a mentoring program and works through BBBSSJC to facilitate the program. Corporate employees serve as mentors in one-to-one relationships with children to provide adult friendship, academic encouragement, guidance, and social development. BBBS provides on-going support and supervision to the mentor, child, and parent.
